The encoded protein has been identified as a moonlighting protein based on its ability to perform mechanistically distinct functions. Defects in xanthine dehydrogenase cause xanthinuria, may contribute to adult respiratory stress syndrome, and may potentiate influenza infection through an oxygen metabolite-dependent mechanism.
